Oil Changes and Winter Cold.

What do you need to know about the importance of keeping your oil changed in these cold winter months in the Kansas City area?  The most important point to consider is your choice of motor oil and filter when temperatures are sub-freezing.  Having your oil changed every 3000 miles is always the right thing to do NO MATTER what the season.

If the oil that you choose this time of year is too thin it simply will not provide sufficient protection for your chilly engine.  Gooey oil prohibits your battery and your starter motor in particular from spinning the engine fast enough for it to properly fire.  Always consult with a professional on choosing the proper oil viscosity.

Can a Shock or Strut Freeze?

In the dead of winter dozens of things can go wrong with your vehicle.  The obvious ones are the heating system or deflated tires or simply an overworked battery.  But how about your shocks and struts?  They are being subjected not only to the anomalies of the changing road conditions, but the harsh winter weather as well.

Have you heard a thumping sound coming from your driver’s side back wheel area?  It is entirely possible that an aging shock or strut has frozen up and will not operate at its normal efficiency.  You may not know this, but the oil in a shock or strut is very thin and can thicken in extremely cold weather rendering the shock very stiff until the weather warms up.

Do not ignore the well-being of your shocks and struts in the dead of winter in the Kansas City area.  The “bouncing” that you are feeling in your car is not good for it and NOT safe for you.  Make an appointment today to have your car’s shocks and struts checked where you trust all of your vehicle’s mechanical work Able Auto Service at 837 Osage Ave. in Kansas City KS.  Call us toll free at (877) 716-0776.

Your Car vs. The Cold.

This time of year we dread getting into our sub-arctic vehicles.  Your poor car can be effected by the cold even quicker than you.  As the temperature drops below freezing and nearing zero the problems that your vehicle may face continue to mount.  Here, for example are five things that cold weather can do to your car.

1.  Your battery can die in cold weather.  Don’t procrastinate!  Drive in while you still can and have it tested.
2.  Fluids within your car will thicken.  Transmission fluid is the big one to be aware of.
3.  Keep your tires inflated.  Cold air takes quite a toll on air pressure.
4. Your wipers and washer solvent may fail just when you need them the most.
5. Spark plugs go haywire much quicker in colder weather.

All of these things and many more are preventable with proper maintenance.  Don’t wait until old man winter strands you in the middle of nowhere.  Call Able Auto Service to have your vehicle checked for potential winter problems.  It isn’t going to get warmer in the Kansas City area any time soon.  Call Able at (877) 716-0776 and make an appointment to visit their shop at 837 Osage Ave. in Kansas City KS.

Your Car’s Heating System.

When you make a quick trip to the grocery store or to pick up the kids at school have you noticed that your car is taking longer to heat up?  The method used to warm a car's cabin isn't a whole lot different from the one used to keep its engine cool.  In fact, it's all hooked together and runs on the same circuit.  A much smaller radiator called the heater core uses the same hot coolant to keep the cabin warm, but this time of year you want it to warm up instantly.

When your vehicle’s thermostat begins to wear out it either remains stuck open or it can close entirely.  If the thermostat is worn out it might be preventing the coolant from getting warm enough to heat the cabin.  There may also be sediment accumulating on the heater core.  A flush may be required to eliminate that gunk.

No one wants to drive around the Kansas City area shivering this winter.  At the first sign of diminished performance from your vehicle’s heating system drive in to Able Auto Service located at 837 Osage Ave. in Kansas City KS.  If need be give them a call for an appointment on their toll free number at (877) 716-0776.

Safety First this Holiday Season.

We hope this will be the best holiday season of all for you and your family.  Take extra time when negotiating traffic this time of year with shopping and holiday parties, etc.  We want to see you enjoy the New Year.  If the weather becomes inclement please slow down.  You will get where you are going in time.   Trust and believe whoever is waiting for you will appreciate that you took the extra time to arrive safe and sound.

One thing to be aware of is the weather conditions in other areas and in the near future where you may be traveling this holiday season.  Please don’t assume that just because it happens to be sunny and moderate today in Kansas City (if by some miracle it is) that three days from now the weather will be the same in St. Louis.  Check the forecast ahead of time and make preparations accordingly up to and including leaving a little earlier or later.

During this holiday season and in the year to come get to know the car care professionals in the Kansas City area at Able Auto Service.  We don’t want you to find us by accident, but rather by choice.  Able Auto Service is a full service auto repair shop located at 837 Osage Ave. in Kansas City KS.  Call them for an estimate or to make an appointment at (913) 321-1030.

What is the Function of a Muffler?

We know that a muffler is a device that reduces the noise emitted by the exhaust of an external combustion engine.  Although a muffler does not have any primary exhaust function it is designed to reduce the sound pressure created by the engine.  One of the negative side effects of a muffler is the fact that the increase of back pressure decreases engine efficiency.

When the flow of exhaust gases from the engine to the atmosphere is obstructed to any degree, back pressure arises and the engine's efficiency, and therefore power, is reduced.  A proper muffler system needs to be regularly maintained in your vehicle.  This is not only a matter of your family’s safety, but public safety as well.

If you begin to hear your muffler acting up do not hesitate. Able Auto Service offers a full range of exhaust systems as well as value-oriented replacement mufflers.  Able Auto Service is dedicated to not only keeping the Kansas City area safe and quiet, but helping the environment as well.  Give us a call at (913) 321-1030 - and make an appointment at our shop at 837 Osage Ave. in Kansas City KS.
